I start every painting without a pre-concieved idea of how the finished piece will result; each painting produces its own form of rationality. Forms are improvised intuitively and transparent layers of paint are applied, obscuring areas, but also creating new areas. I do not wish to prioritise motifs or forms (or glorify certain types of shapes) but allow the picture to suggest the direction of its own development, to a certain extent, until a composition emerges.
